For most people though, this is not always possible, so you need to get closer than the dealer to 21.

At the start of the game you are dealt two cards. If you don't have Blackjack you need to decide what to do next. There are two main options:

Hit - Get another card. You want your cards to be as close to the total of 21 as possible without going over (bust). Cards 2-10 are worth the amount on them, Jacks, Queens and Kings are worth ten points and aces are worth one or eleven (you can choose).

Other Blackjack things you can do:

Double - the amount you bet will be doubled and you will be dealt one more card. After you are dealt your card you can't do anything else and it is the dealers go.
Split - If you are dealt two of the same value card you can choose to split. Your cards will be separated and you play them as if you had two hands. Once you have stuck you move on to the next card where you can hit r stick. Once you have stuck on the second card it is the dealers turn.
Insurance - The dealers cards are dealt with one face down and one face up. If the card face up is an ace you can choose to take out insurance. This is basically a bet on the side (half your original bet) that the dealer other card is worth 10 (Blackjack).

Some good things to know:

The dealer has to stick on 17+.
If the dealer has less than 17 they have to hit.
You can stick on whatever total you want.
