History Of Roulette
Today, roulette features in virtually every land based casino and can be played on hundreds, if not thousands of casino sites online.
Before the Internet and TV, news didn’t tend to travel as fast as it does today, and it took quite a while for roulette to become popular.
The first roulette wheel
The idea of roulette first came about when a man named Blaise Pascal tried to invent the perpetual motion machine.
The game of roulette, as it is known today was first played in Paris in 1796. The wheel looked just as it does today. The wheel had black and red segments each with a number from 1-36, as well as two green sections numbered with a single 0 and a double 00.
How roulette has changed
The game of roulette has changed throughout history was different variations popping up and disappearing.
Two French brothers, who removed the green section with 00, made one of the most notable changes to the roulette wheel. This meant the house lost some of its edge, making the roulette game more appealing to players. Today this game is known as European roulette.
Did you know that the numbers on a roulette wheel add up to 666? It is said that the two French brothers made a deal with the devil in exchange for the secrets of the roulette wheel…
The other very notable change was the development of the American roulette wheel. The original roulette wheel was added to and American roulette was born.
American roulette was developed after the casinos decided they wanted a bigger house edge over players. They achieved this by adding an American eagle to the wheel, as well as the green 0 and 00.
This, understandably, did not go down to well with the playing public and was later removed. This left American roulette as we know it today, numbers 1-36 and a ingle zero and a double 00.
Roulette today
Today roulette is more popular than ever. It features in pretty much every land-based casino, and is everywhere online.
There are numerous variations of roulette that can be played today, mini roulette and French roulette for example.
Playing roulette at online casinos is great because it means you can play for free whilst you get to grips with the rules, then get some great bonuses when you play for real money. These bonuses are only available in online casinos.
Why not give it a go and play roulette yourself?
